Why the MA in Education?

Originally I had intended to go to graduate school so I might be able to have better footing in the job market. Being a young teacher with little experience often stifled me from getting job offers as a teacher. I thought the MA would improve those odds. I also intended to further study education to enhance my understanding of interdisciplinary education, something I feel is necessary and not treated with enough seriousness at a secondary level. I have witnessed departments continually divided due to budgetary reasons and standard testing. That hinders the growth of the community of a school, and I wanted to change that.

Now that I've finished my MA journey, I feel that I am more informed about my theoretical standing as an educator, which has both informed my practice, and enabled me to inform my colleagues about the importance of a foundation for content learning. I still believe education is innately interdisciplinary, but now I don't just have my "feelings" about it, I have theoretical footing, and my own research, that I believe will aid me in hopefully enacting curricular changes that will foster a more connected educational community.

Why Educational Technology?

I am a product of the digital age. I had a television in my room since I was 3, a computer in the house since the age of 5, and built my own with my eldest brother at the age of 10. I have seen digital communication grow from chat rooms that I had to wait to reload on a dial up connection, to instant text messages received on my cell phone. I believe that my experience of having constant digital connection and seeing virtual space develop gives me an important viewpoint on emerging technology and the intimacy it has been given in the lives of people today. This understanding coupled with my knowledge and passion of educational theory will allow me to further explore and help to define what new media technologies can bring to the enhancement of the classroom.

Also, I have the advantage of having grown up as others were learning to navigate the digital world, being a part of rule creation and website enhancement by being around at the ground level. I can recall past websites and past internet etiquette and recount the changes that have occurred in my life. While children and teenagers are doing this today as well, they are being tossed into an online environment that rarely has the development of rules or regulations written down, nor are many of their teachers likely to have grown up contributing to the creation of the digital citizenship created in varying online environments. My navigation of online communities, for forums to game culture, gives me a unique perspective that I think is important to take into account when considering how to educate students on the risks and rewards of digital access.

This subject area is constantly evolving, requiring continued scrutiny and redefinition. I want to be a part of the emergence of this new educational theory as an educator who is not only interested in the field, but has lived it from a young age.
