Education Odyssey - Reflections and Artifacts

“We can’t think much when we don’t know much. But we can wonder! From now until tomorrow morning when you come to school again, will you do that? Will you wonder why and wonder why? For sometimes when we wonder, we can make things begin to happen.” The Wheel on the School – Meindert DeJong

Theory is a hydra who grows two more approaches to a subject when you’ve tried to rid yourself of one. Fortunately this hydra is more the conversationalist than the Hero-murdering type. Just when I sliced off the head of pragmatism, I found progressivism and reconstructionism eagerly awaiting my judgment. I turned my sword of understanding toward realism and once the theory-head was taken down, I found myself staring at perennialism and essentialism. I discovered on my educational knowledge odyssey that theoretical knowledge was not a beast to be tamed and moved on from, but rather a companion who merely looked like a monster because of the massive amount of information that was held within the subject.

On my journey I feel that I have been blessed by being able to gain not only base theoretical knowledge regarding education, but also new, developing theories regarding media literacy. As an Ed Tech major I have an advantage for not only being on the cutting edge of technology entering the classrooms, but being at the forefront of a curricular theory change. Throughout my time in the Masters program at Sonoma State University I have been conscious of the burgeoning theories of education that are being molded from the past and I have used my theoretical work to attempt to answer questions about what educational theory has been and what it can be with the introduction of new media technologies.

Below are links to my artifacts of papers and experiences in my MA program that will elaborate on process and theories about education that have informed my thesis.
