Theory is a hydra who grows two more approaches to a subject
when you’ve tried to rid yourself of one. Fortunately this hydra is more the
conversationalist than the Hero-murdering type. Just when I sliced off the head
of pragmatism, I found progressivism and reconstructionism eagerly awaiting my
judgment. I turned my sword of understanding toward realism and once the
theory-head was taken down, I found myself staring at perennialism and
essentialism. I discovered on my educational knowledge odyssey that theoretical
knowledge was not a beast to be tamed and moved on from, but rather a companion
who merely looked like a monster because of the massive amount of information
that was held within the subject.
On my journey I feel that I have been blessed by being able
to gain not only base theoretical knowledge regarding education, but also new,
developing theories regarding media literacy. As an Ed Tech major I have an
advantage for not only being on the cutting edge of technology entering the
classrooms, but being at the forefront of a curricular theory change. Throughout
my time in the Masters program at Sonoma State University I have been conscious
of the burgeoning theories of education that are being molded from the past and
I have used my theoretical work to attempt to answer questions about what educational
theory has been and what it can be with the introduction of new media
technologies.
