One Pager

My first foray into theory during the Masters program was through a course that focused solely on theory and its relation to curriculum, EDCT 585. In this course I had to create a one page response to reading that I was assigned for the week. I love that the response could take whatever form I wished. I could use images and words. I’m sure if I had asked, sound would be acceptable with accompanying lyrics. The imaginative and free form nature of the responses appealed to my theatrical side and allowed me to take advantage of processing theory however I wished.

This one pager deals with concepts of postmodernism. I’ve always been really intrigued by the theory even though I find it so hard to define. I decided that I would attempt to define it, and then open up a discussion through my facebook on postmodernism to see others’ takes on it, using conversational text as the writing for my one pager. I thought it would be fitting to use facebook since the comments are made in real time, constantly evolving, just as postmodernism seems to be. It challenged me to attempt to explain the concept of postmodernism, a lesson I feel is important when stepping outside my subject area. I found myself wondering, is this how I will always explain postmodernism? Does anyone understand what I’m saying? Can I pull myself away from the jargon in the classroom and use terms my average facebook friend could understand? I think I was successful, even if only two of my friends responded. Still, a small conversation was a conversation none the less and really helped me to establish a new process for analyzing text. Additionally, I realized the value of group writing, and how it is just as important to critical thought as analyzing a text solo.
